One of the most common questions our application engineers get is: what size veneer dryer do I need for my mill? The honest answer is it depends — on incoming veneer thickness, log species, target moisture content, heating media, and the operating hours your mill runs. This article walks through the sizing logic so you can size your own dryer before reaching out for a formal quote.
The capacity formula
Annual dried-veneer capacity is calculated as:
Q_annual = q_per_hour × hours_per_day × days_per_year × utilization_factor Where: q_per_hour = dried veneer output per machine hour (m³/h) hours_per_day = planned shift pattern (typically 16-20 for shift-based mills) days_per_year = planned operating days (typically 280-330) utilization_factor = 0.85 typical (accounts for changeovers, maintenance)
For a mid-range mill running two shifts, 300 days/year, with 85% utilization, this simplifies to ~4,000 hours/year of effective dryer run-time. A 24 m³/day dryer running continuously produces 8,760 m³/year of dried veneer.
Heating media trade-offs
The heating media you choose has a bigger impact on operating cost than the dryer's purchase price. Common options:
- Biomass hot water (90-110 °C): Lowest operating cost where biomass is available (sawdust, wood waste). Capital cost: medium. Most popular choice in SE Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe.
- Natural gas direct-fired: Higher operating cost than biomass but simpler integration where there's no biomass supply. Common in Middle East, North America.
- Thermal oil: Used where the existing factory has a thermal-oil boiler (common in plywood press lines). Simplest integration if already on-site.
- Steam: Used where there's an existing steam boiler. Common in pulp & paper integrated mills.
Decision framework
- Calculate your target annual capacity from downstream press demand (don't over-spec — dryer is rarely the bottleneck once sized correctly)
- Choose heating media based on your factory's existing utilities and local fuel costs
- Size the dryer for your calculated capacity with 15-20% margin (changeovers, mix of thicknesses, dryer maintenance windows)
- Validate with us — send your inputs and we'll confirm the sizing with our application engineers. This is included free with every quote request.
